I kind of hate the Solo family.



I finished Invincible. Meeeeeeh. The ending seemed like it went by really fast and was a big cop-out (and I mean by cop-out I mean the build-up during the whole series, not just this book). All the Solo kids are pretty much dead to me. The whole Daala thing is a huge LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL too. Like, did everyone forget all the shit she did? YAY I WISH SHE COULD RUN EARTH! I WOULD TOTALLY BACK HER AND HER KAMIKAZE MISSIONS AND MURDERING AND HATRED OF SQUID!!111

Besides all that, I enjoyed Zekk (natch), the Hapan twins, Ben, Tenel Ka -- even Tahiri, who has been kind of annoying me this series. I absolutely loved her whole LOOK AT ME BEING TEH SITH SECRETARY and straightening Caedus' lapel on his cloak and shit. Love it. I also dug Caedus killing that Mando by doing the whole HAY SHATTERPOINT THING!!!1 Nice.

The few flashbacks littered in regarding Jacen and Jaina were classy, cause they reminded me of the times I actually liked the Solo twins -- but they kind of served the purpose of pissing me off instead of making me all angsty and emo about their upcoming fight. I hate what they've turned into. Sure, evil!Jacen is hot and all, but reading the flashbacks reminds of better times. Especially the one where he stays with her all night and is totally petting her hair and whispering comforting things in his total amazing Jacen Solo fashion (the 280 - 281 one). That was fucking gorgeous. <3 Denning. I want to see Denning writing more NJO-era stuff.

And I found that anytime I read about Han and Leia I got this sour taste in my mouth. Like that whole family is tainted by ass now. And now they're gonna get their butt-tastical ways all over Allana and taint her too. YOU ONLY HAVE A 25% CHANCE OF DYING, KID. OH WAIT, I SHOULD NEVER TELL YOU THE ODDS.

I thought Star Wars was about redemption and yay good guys and shit, but I guess not. LOL on Vader being able to get redeemed after twenty years of being a dicksmack -- but a three-month trip over doesn't even warrant a try. And wait, Daala can be redeemed from her villain/whore-bitch-for-many-years status and become CoS, but Jacen Solo doesn't even warrant a lock-up and a good long stew in a cell? And we can't forget the Moff Council of Assholes who just gets to switch sides and play along to stay alive. "OH WE SO SORRY TENEL KA WE DIDN'T MEAN IT. NOT AT ALL. *halo* D:"

And y'all know how I love me some Jacen Solo -- but I would be arguing this for any character who went dark in this fashion. And I'm not the only one. There are people out there who absolutely have always hated Jacen and they're like, "Really? This is how it ends?"


Though I do have to give the whole GFFA a big LOL JACEN FTW on him totally achieving what he set out to do. Ah, guppy.

Oh and the best (well, for me, since TK is my other favorite -- and also wasn't in this book, like, at all) is the fact that now that Allana has been handed off to her new family of Han, Leia and Jaina -- Tenel Ka is no longer needed and will most likely never show up again. Until she gets assassinated and the FAMILY HAS TO GO INVESTIGATE OH NOES.

Way to fail with your first three children, Heia/Lan/whatever your awesome couple name is! NOW YOU CAN TRY AGAIN!1


I totally must give props for the good stuff though. Which was like anything Zekk/Taryn/Trista/Ben/Tahiri. Especially:

By the time Ben had finished his sanisteam, Trista was warming the engines for departure, He wrapped a towel around his waist and slipped out of the refresher compartment -- then noticed that the door to the main cabin was slightly ajar.

"Sorry!" Taryn called. "I don't know how that was left open!"

LOL SO CUTE. XD

Aaaand I am officially in love with Taryn:

"Later is good too. But don't disappoint me. We have a date."

"Uh, sure." Zekk was clearly reeling from the from the straightforward manner of Hapan women; he flushed and glanced over at Jaina. "I mean, if you don't mind."

Taryn turned to Jaina, her expression more appraising than apologetic. "He's yours?"

"Well, n-no," Jaina said. Zekk looked even more uncomfortable, and through the Force, Jaina could feel Jag smirking at her dilemma. "Of course he's not mine. We don't--"

"Well, then," Taryn interrupted. She smiled and squeezed Zekk's biceps. "Lucky me."

TEEEEEEEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHHE. I LOVE BITCHY HAPANS. ESPECIALLY ONES RELATED TO TK. XD

Zel Twins >>>>>>>>>> Solo Twins.



And mark my words. If that darling brat starts calling those two "Mommy" and "Daddy" in any future book, I am so far out of this shit it's not even funny. D:


Props also to the new best Jacen Solo joke in the history of ever: "What's the difference between a lightsaber and a glowrod? A lightsaber impresses girls!"

YES. LOOOOOOOVE. <3


Final words on the series: It's like the whole galaxy just got Rickrolled. Seriously.

I guess, in the end, I thought this was a good story that works as a lonnnng, exciting, AU fanfic. But you're totally right, this isn't what SW is about.

Still, if the authors don't follow their own canon/continuity, why do we have to? :D

Also! My friend [info]temple_mistress met Denning this afternoon. She said he said that he cried during writing SBS, and was "a wreck" when writing Invincible. That almost makes me want to enjoy it more than I am. Because, bawwww.

Zekk will be back. He's got to be. That's WAY too sloppy of an ending for it to mean no-more-Zekk-ever.

Invincible was underwhelming. If it was scrubbed clean of the Star Wars stuff and was Book 3 in an original trilogy, then it might work. I like Denning's writing style. But the book was way too rushed and left too many loose ends to be a satisfactory ending of a Star Wars nonology.

Jacen should have been captured with the aid of ysalimiri, and maimed while in captivity so that he couldn't escape and could only get replacement legs or whatever if he really truly was repentant. Or they could have Force stripped him totally or something. Come on, somebody had to know how or be able to learn. If Jaina can learn shatterpoint that fast, Luke could have just Force-stripped the boy.

The whole sexualizing of Ben makes me a bit uncomfortable, but that's just my bias, I guess. If LotF spanned 3 years like it was originally going to, then he'd be 16-17 and it would be no big deal, but for some reason 14 just sets off all these "ew!" bells in my head when the other party is an adult. With the Hapan twins it didn't grate so much - they're just doing their thing, and it came across as more playful than anything, but Tahiri... yuck. I wanted brain bleach. I like the idea of them together, but not yet, kthx. And not with the whole he-redeemed-her story. The Conquest plot already double-filled her quota of Bad Romance Cliches and they need something new.

Denning's writing couldn't save this book. :( It made it readable to the end, but I still came away with a bad taste in my mouth, and it wasn't from the corn chips I was eating. They were fresh.

I really think they should've kept him alive and totally messed up. There were so many possibilities they could've had with him still alive -- especially if he was stripped of the Force. And I totally agree with you on the Ben thing. I thought that scene was totally awesome and giggle-worthy, but only when I pretended Ben was legal. XD

And aww, Zekk is so cute asking Jaina's permission to go on a date with a girl. That boy doesn't get out much, and I *love* him for it. <333

But, yeah. IMO, Evil!Jacen, or at least permanantly evil Jacen, is something that should have been saved for the crack fanfic writers. It was a fun possibility with plenty of potential, but all it really amounted to in this series was the pointless sacrifice of a lot of great characters, including the only real freaking central protagonist under fifty that they hadn't managed to completely sabotage yet. Not to mention that it really defies the whole central message of Star Wars. And that just makes me depressed.

So I'm going to pretend to the whole thing is just a weird ass AU fic and write the hell around it. Or through it. XD All my favorites have been killed off, permanently side-lined, or turned into walking plot devices, so I don't think it will really be all that hard for me to ignore canon from now on, honestly. XD

That part is really pretty, but it's short. And Zekk is pretty darling in this book, which makes it all the more BIG SUCK that he goes MIA. There's also a fun part where they're in their X-Wings and Jaina realizes Zekk is thinking about Taryn and she gets all WAIIII I DON'T CARE BUT I DO. Which has me all, "DUDE WOULD YOU STOP WAFFLING? FOR ONCE?" It's like she's still in high school deciding who she wants to go with to prom and I'm like DDDDDDDDD:!

And yessssssssss, the whole theme of SW was basically shafted for the STRESS AND WAR KILL PEOPLE AND JACEN SOLO IS BATSHIT CRAZY SITH WHAT? theme. :(

I WILL HELP YOU WRITE AROUND IT. We can all write our own series! Muahahahah!

You know, I have my own shipper preferences as much as the next fangirl, but at this point it's just plain insulting that Jaina is the kid that gets all the wishy-washy romantic crap as if that's the most important thing she has to worry about when no one else gets that treatment. I mean, the Solo boys brought us two of the best Star Wars books ever, Conquest and Traitor. Conquest for living up to the whole corny traditional heroes journey (Anakin Solo and the paragon of hero-fu) and Traitor for totally inverting that and making us see Star Wars in a whole new (but still Starwarsy) way. For them two off two of the most iconic characters of the post-OT EU is really...dumb. And...lame. When are they going to get us new characters with great stories like this again?

Well, I wouldn't bash Han and Leia TOO much. I mean, sometime you can do the best you can with your kids and they still end up all screwed up. I've seen it happen too many times.

I mean, Anakin turned out OK. It wasn't Han and Leia's fault he got killed. Jacen and Jaina were fine when they were younger and then the war happened and they changed, which tends to happen during war. They're only human after all.

Yeah, I don't want to bash them cause I usually love them -- but they seem so callous and uncaring in this book. They're like, "Okay Jaina! Have fun killing our last remaining son that we did jack-nothing to help!"

This whole series just threw them out of whack for me. The way they've always acted towards Jacen sort of threw me. They had their moments with him but it always seemed like, "Oh, don't mind him, he's a special kid." And in this book it's like they didn't even give a crap anymore and were just happy to have him dead and take his daughter. :|
